It's a game of wait and see

So while DHS has been working on rules for the states to implement Real ID, Sens. Akaka and Sununu have introduced a bill that would repeal much of Real ID.  That could be good, or bad, depending on how you view your privacy and your safety on the roadways.

So as we head into the holidays and approach the 110th Congress (where the fate of Real ID may be decided) let's take a look at what's  "real" about the Real ID situation.

Just this week, the Wisconsin DOT Secretary sent a letter to a number of federal legislators warning of the potential impacts to Wis. motorists if Real ID remains unfunded.  And over the last few months a number of other states have echoed the same sentiments.

Speaker-elect Pelosi says she will work to implement the remaining provisions from the 9/11 Commission report.  Remember, the driver's license provisions in the Intelligence Reform Act were later repealed by, and reshaped into, the Real ID Act.

The state groups (NGA, NCSL and AAMVA) in late September offered commonsense and fiscally sound solutions to DHS.

And in February 2004, AAMVA, through its member jurisdictions offered a blueprint for strengthening driver's license security.

The discussion is "real" and open.  And our license and ID holders are waiting for the verdict.

Until next time, stay safe behind the wheel.
