A Time Consuming Process...and Worthwhile

The Sacramento Bee's Tony Bizjak is perhaps among the first to report (Back - seat driver: DMV giving new license tests a spin, Sacramento Bee, May 21, 2007) on what should be a trend in driver retesting.  That is, the retesting of drivers of all ages.

Since we all age at different rates, it makes good sense that state DMVs would not retest drivers based on age alone.  And let's be honest, for most of us, the last time we took a driver's test was when we turned 16.

The idea here is simple, to identify those drivers whose cognitive and physical abilities might not be up to par for driving.  And then, administer a fair and balanced test to gauge the person's driving fitness.

Today this is happening in six licensing offices in California.  If this type of driver evaluation spreads to other state DMVs, that might mean a longer wait for us all when we go to renew.  But in the end, you can bet DMV will have done its due diligence to help rid our roads of unsafe drivers, young, old and in-between.

Until next time, stay safe behind the wheel.
