Vehicle fraud headed toward extinction

Ok, so maybe it's not happening as fast as AAMVA envisioned it in the late 90s.  But with more states considering participation in the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), vehicle fraud crimes like VIN cloning, title washing and odometer rollback may soon be a thing of the past.

Case in point.

On July 29 and August 5, AAMVA successfully loaded New York's title and brand data to NMVTIS.  This additional data now brings the total amount of current title data to 256,286,805 records.  Along with current title data, 111,723,994 title history records are now stored.  With the addition of New York brand data, 33,070,672 brand history records are also stored in NMVTIS.

Just take a look at the state by state participation map below.  But don't let it fool you.  Actually all nine of the "fully" online states, and all five of the "partially" online states, have real-time access to vehicle title history.

By the way, be on the look out for a few news stories in the coming days on NMVTIS.

Until next time, stay safe behind the wheel.
