Vehicle Fraud is HOT!
Actually, it's not "hot." It's a pretty cold and calculated crime that is high profit and very low risk and leaves consumers many times with a clunker, or with a stolen vehicle. But the issue is "heating up" in the press once again, as indicated by Chris Woodyard's piece in Monday's USA Today.
By the way, I feel Woodyard's piece was very thorough and quite fair.
Remember, I told you last week this issue was heating up again. So why did I get this one right?
I have a crystal ball.
No really, we're sitting on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. And post Katrina, there were over 500,000 vehicles listed from the gulf region as damaged on NICB's Web site. And now these rust-infested (yet spit-shined) clunkers are making their way back onto the roadways and into consumers' driveways endangering all our lives.
Consumers and the press are figuring out that the system that was designed to prevent vehicle fraud crimes like title-washing, VIN cloning and odometer rollbacks is still not finished. This system is called NMVTIS.
So, until NMVTIS is finished, or a better alternative is created, expect this topic to receive even more attention in the coming weeks.
And just so you know, to finish the federally-mandate NMVTIS, the state DMVs need the funds to participate.
Until next time, stay safe behind the wheel.
