Traffic Stops, and Foreign Driver’s Licenses—What to do?

Neil D. Schuster

AAMVA President and CEO

What should a police offer know when presented with a foreign driver’s license during a traffic stop? Developing a training program to help educate law enforcement about various jurisdiction requirements and the types of documents to expect from foreign drivers is the charge of AAMVA’s International Driver License Working Group.

I had a chance to attend a working group meeting this week. Driver’s licensing and law enforcement representatives are working together to create a training program and materials for distribution to police chiefs to use in ensuring their officers know what to expect and how to respond. The effort, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is due for completion in September 2011.
